Why Choose Us

Why Driveways by L.D. Williams

Boost Curb Appeal Instantly

A new concrete driveway is one of the highest-ROI home improvements you can make. A decorative finish takes it even further — neighbors notice.

Built for NC Soil & Weather

Durham clay soil and seasonal temperature swings demand specific mix designs and expansion joint placement. We engineer every driveway for your site conditions.

Lasts 30+ Years with Proper Care

A properly installed and sealed concrete driveway outlasts asphalt by decades. Our work is backed by three generations of Triangle-area installations still in service.

More Affordable Than You Think

Concrete costs more upfront than asphalt but requires far less maintenance and lasts much longer — making total cost of ownership significantly lower.

Decorative Options at Every Budget

From a clean broom-finish at $6/sqft to an elaborate stamped cobblestone at $18/sqft — we have options for every budget and aesthetic.

Local, Family-Owned Since 1964

L.D. Williams has installed driveways across Durham, Raleigh, Chapel Hill and the Triangle for over 60 years. We stand behind every project.

DRIVEWAY FINISH OPTIONS

Choose from five core finishes for your Durham concrete driveway. Each offers a different balance of cost, aesthetics, and maintenance.

  • Broom finish — clean, functional, most affordable ($6–$9/sqft)
  • Stamped concrete — stone, cobblestone, brick patterns ($10–$18/sqft)
  • Exposed aggregate — decorative pebble texture, excellent grip ($8–$14/sqft)
  • Colored/integral pigment — custom hues throughout the slab
  • Acid stain — marbled, earthy tones on existing or new concrete
  • Combination finishes — stamped field with exposed aggregate border

THICKNESS & STRUCTURAL SPECS

Concrete thickness is one of the most important factors in driveway longevity. We specify the right thickness for your vehicle load and soil conditions.

  • 4" thickness — standard residential passenger vehicles
  • 5" thickness — recommended for SUVs, light trucks, and heavy use
  • 6"+ thickness — RVs, heavy trucks, commercial vehicles
  • Proper sub-base compaction is as important as thickness
  • Rebar or wire mesh reinforcement on all driveways
  • Control joints placed to manage cracking strategically

THE INSTALLATION PROCESS

We walk every client through the process from site preparation through sealing. Transparency is part of our service.

  • Site evaluation and grade assessment
  • Removal and disposal of existing driveway (if applicable)
  • Sub-base preparation and compaction
  • Form setting and rebar/mesh installation
  • Concrete pour, finishing, and decorative treatment
  • Curing compound application
  • Final seal coat after sufficient cure time

MAINTENANCE GUIDE

Concrete driveways are low-maintenance but not no-maintenance. Following these steps keeps your driveway looking great for decades.

  • Seal every 3–5 years with a quality penetrating sealer
  • Avoid de-icing salts — use sand for winter traction instead
  • Clean oil stains promptly with a degreaser
  • Pressure wash annually to remove dirt and mildew
  • Fill hairline cracks early before water infiltration causes damage
